Betaine is used as a metabolic intermediate in animals and indirectly involved in animal protein.
In animals, both growing and adult animals require a steady supply of methyl groups, while animals cannot synthesize methyl groups and require a dietary supply. Methyl is an indispensable and important substance in the metabolism of various substances in animals, and plays an important role in immune, nervous, cardiovascular, urinary, digestive and other systems. The main sources of methyl are related to methionine, choline, betaine and folic acid.
Therefore, when the supply of choline in the feed is insufficient, adding betaine can partially replace choline. In general, about 75% of methionine is involved in protein synthesis, while 25% is used to provide methyl groups and participate in methyl metabolism. Betaine can only provide methyl groups and reduce the consumption of methyl groups provided by methionine, but it cannot replace the role of methionine in protein synthesis.
