What Is The Difference Between Salicylic Acid And Salicin?
Jun 11, 2025
what is Salicin?
Salicin powder is found in plants of the Salicaceae family (such as willow bark and birch bark), with the purple willow bark containing up to 25–30%. It can be obtained by solvent extraction of bark or leaves, and can also be chemically synthesized industrially.
It appears as a white powder, tastes bitter, has a melting point of 199–202°C, and is hygroscopic.
salicin benefits:
1. Antipyretic and analgesic:
It can relieve fever, headache and mild pain.
2. Other effects:
Bitter taste, stomachic, local anesthesia.
3. Anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic:
Salicin willow bark can inhibit inflammatory factors (such as COX enzymes) and is used as an adjuvant treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
application:
| Application field | Application |
| Medical field | Oral antirheumatic drugs and analgesics, but the efficacy is not stable |
| Cosmetics field | Added as white willow bark extract for anti-inflammatory and soothing effects |
| Biochemical reagents | Substrate for detecting β-glucosidase activity |

salicin and salicylic acid:
1. Chemical structure and source
- Salicin: naturally present in plants such as willow bark and birch bark, it is a glycoside compound of salicylic acid and glucose.
- Salicylic acid: can be obtained by hydrolysis of salicin or artificial synthesis, and is an independent organic acid.
2. Biological activity and mechanism of action
- Salicin: needs to be converted into salicylic acid through human metabolism to play anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, and the onset of action is slow.
- Salicylic acid pure powder: directly has anti-inflammatory, oil control, keratin dissolving, pore unblocking and other effects, and is widely used in acne removal, blackhead removal and keratin conditioning.
3. Solubility and application scenarios
- Salicin has poor water solubility and is mostly used in oral preparations;
- Salicylic acid has strong fat solubility and can easily penetrate pores, making it suitable for external use.
side effect:
1. Side effects of salicin
- Lower risk: Due to metabolic transformation, direct toxicity is low, but excessive oral intake may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
- Possible allergies: A few people may experience rashes or allergic reactions.
2. Side effects of salicylic acid
- Local irritation:It can cause redness, stinging, and peeling of the skin. Excessive use may damage the skin barrier and cause skin sensitivity.
- Systemic risk:Large-area long-term use may cause poisoning, and children and those with liver and kidney abnormalities are at higher risk.
- Photosensitivity: Strict sun protection is required after use, otherwise it is easy to get sunburned or pigmented.
