Hovenia dulcis extract is a natural plant powder made from the fruit (with fleshy stalks) or dried, mature seeds of the Hovenia dulcis plant (family Rhamnaceae), through processes including washing, extraction (with water or ethanol), filtration, concentration, and spray drying.

1. Treatment of acute alcohol intoxication

For a long time, Hovenia dulcis seeds (Japanese raisin tree seeds) have been used in traditional medicine to treat acute alcohol intoxication. The primary active component responsible for this anti-alcohol effect is dihydromyricetin (DHM), a flavonoid with antioxidant properties that was identified in the seeds in 1997.

 

Modern medical research has confirmed that DHM can block alcohol from reaching receptors in the brain and neutralize alcohol metabolites in the body, thereby alleviating hangover symptoms.

 

Researchers evaluated the effect of hovenia dulcis extract on blood alcohol concentrations in mice. Compared to the control group, mice treated with the extract showed a more rapid decrease in blood alcohol levels.

In 2012, Chinese researchers demonstrated the efficacy of DHM in combating alcohol intoxication and alcohol dependence, proposing it as a potential therapeutic agent for alcohol abuse syndrome.

 

2. Liver Protection

The liver is the largest organ in the human body and plays a pivotal role in metabolism. Alcohol consumption can lead to elevated transaminase levels; ALT and AST are two common markers of liver injury.

 

Research has shown that Hovenia dulcis seeds (Japanese raisin tree seeds) can alleviate alcohol-induced oxidative liver injury. Specifically, this is evidenced by reductions in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), triglycerides, malondialdehyde (MDA), and hepatic triglycerides, alongside increases in hepatic glutathione levels and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT).

It has central nervous system depressant effects, anticonvulsant properties, and can dispel wind, unblock meridians, and stop spasms.

Hovenia dulcis extract can lower blood pressure, quench thirst, promote urination and defecation, and enhance the body's immunity.

Hovenia dulcis can regulate physiological functions and assist in skin care, beauty, and cell protection.

 

6. Antioxidant

Research indicates that Hovenia dulcis seeds may serve as a good natural source of antioxidants. The FRAP assay is a common method for evaluating the antioxidant activity of plants, while the TEAC test measures free radical scavenging activity.

 

The results demonstrate that Hovenia dulcis extract possess strong antioxidant activity (measured at 245.11 ± 10.17 μmol Fe²⁺/g via the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay and 284.35 ± 23.57 μmol TE/g via the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assay) and contain significant amounts of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, as well as small quantities of polysaccharides.

 

7. Anti-fatigue

Studies have shown that Hovenia dulcis seeds enhance the tolerance of rats to cold, heat, and hypoxia, suggesting an anti-fatigue effect. By comparing the anti-fatigue activities of the water-extracted/alcohol-precipitated extract and the ethyl acetate extract, researchers identified flavonoids as the effective components responsible for this effect, with quercetin and dihydromyricetin preliminarily identified as the specific active constituents.
