What is Fucoxanthin?

Fucoxanthin extract is a brown-yellow carotenoid belonging to the xanthophyll family. It is mainly found in brown algae (such as kelp and wakame) and some diatoms. It contains epoxy and olefin bonds and has strong antioxidant and metabolic regulation activities.

Main sources:

1. Brown algae (core source)

  • Edible algae: Undaria pinnatifida, Laminaria japonica, Sargassum.
  • Medicinal algae: Ascophyllum nodosum.

2. Diatoms: Phaeodactylum tricornutum.

3. Artificial synthesis
Use biological fermentation method, but the cost is relatively high and it is still in the research stage.

fucoxanthin health benefits:

1. Weight loss
Brown seaweed fucoxanthin can promote the conversion of white adipose tissue (WAT) to brown fat (BAT) and accelerate calorie consumption. Animal experiments show that its fat reduction effect is 5-10%.

2. Regulate blood sugar
It can inhibit α-glucosidase and delay the decomposition of carbohydrates, which is effective for patients with prediabetes.

3. Antioxidant
Its antioxidant capacity is 100 times that of vitamin E, and it can reduce oxidative damage to DNA.

4. Cardiovascular Protection
It can reduce liver cholesterol synthesis and lower blood lipids.

5. Anti-tumor Potential
Brown seaweed extract fucoxanthin, may inhibit cancer cells through the mitochondrial pathway and has some anti-cancer potential, but research is still ongoing.

Side effects:

1. Thyroid interference
High doses may competitively inhibit iodine absorption, so patients with hyperthyroidism should be cautious.

2. Allergic reactions
People who are allergic to seaweed may experience rashes or gastrointestinal discomfort.

3. Drug interactions
Combined use with anticoagulants may increase the risk of bleeding.

Application areas:

1. Functional food

Add fucoxanthin powder to meal replacement powders and diet drinks.

2. Health products
Anti-fatigue capsules, liver protection tablets.

3. Cosmetics
Anti-aging serums, sunscreens, etc.
