Alginic acid powder, also known as seaweed acid or alginic acid, is a naturally occurring hydrophilic colloid and acidic polysaccharide.

 

It is mainly found in the cell walls and intercellular mucilage of brown algae, and is the main reason why brown algae such as kelp, giant kelp, and Sargassum have a "slippery" feel. Its content in dried kelp can be as high as 30%–40%.

 

Chemically, alginic acid is a linear copolymer composed of two monomers, β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and α-L-guluronic acid (G), linked by 1,4-glycosidic bonds.
