Mulberry Leaf Extract: Active Ingredients, Benefits, Applications
Nov 11, 2025
what is Mulberry leaf extract?
Mulberry leaf extract is a concentrated extract of active substances produced from the dried leaves of the mulberry tree (Morus alba L.), a plant belonging to the Moraceae family, through processes such as solvent extraction, concentration, and purification.
Active Ingredients:
- Flavonoids: Rutin, quercetin, myricetin, isoquercitrin, etc.
- Alkaloids: DNJ, fagomin
- Polysaccharides: β-glucan
- GABA
- Phytosterols
- Chlorogenic acid
- Vitamins: C, B, E
- Minerals: Zinc, iron, calcium, etc.
mulberry leaf extract benefits:
1. Regulates Blood Sugar
Mulberry leaf extract DNJ can inhibit intestinal sugar absorption, while polysaccharides promote insulin secretion, lowering blood sugar through a dual-pathway approach, making it suitable for adjunctive treatment of diabetes.
2. Lowers Blood Lipids
It can lower serum cholesterol and triglycerides and inhibit atherosclerosis.
3. Cardiovascular Protection
GABA dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure; flavonoids improve coronary artery blood flow and prevent coronary heart disease.
4. Antioxidant
The best mulberry leaf extracts can scavenge free radicals, increase superoxide dismutase activity, and delay cell aging.
5. Antibacterial
It has an inhibitory effect on pathogenic microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
6. Anti-inflammatory
It can reduce inflammatory responses and alleviate conjunctivitis, acne, etc.
7. Mulberry leaf extract for weight loss
In high-fat diet-induced obese mice, administration of high-dose mulberry leaf extract resulted in significant reductions in fasting blood glucose, insulin levels, and HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance) scores. After male hamsters were fed mulberry fruit extract for 12 weeks, there was a decrease in body weight and visceral fat-previously elevated by the high-fat diet-along with reductions in serum triacylglycerol, cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol ratios, and free fatty acids.
Furthermore, the mulberry fruit extract downregulated fatty acid synthase and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase, while upregulating hepatic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT-1). Researchers suggest that aqueous mulberry fruit extract can modulate lipolysis and lipogenesis and may be used for weight loss.
8. Prevention of brain injury
Research by Kang et al. demonstrated that C3G, isolated from mulberry extract, exerts a cytoprotective effect on PC12 cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide in vitro and a neuroprotective effect against cerebral ischemic injury induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) in vivo. Therefore, mulberries exhibit neuroprotective properties against ischemic oxidative stress in both in vivo and in vitro models.
