The synthetic method of alpha lipoic acid powder, comprises the following steps:

 

1. Use R(+)α-methylbenzylamine to salify racemic lipoic acid;

2. Separation of the crystallized diastereomeric salt of R(+)α-lipoic acid-R(+)α-methylbenzylamine by filtration;

3. Purification by recrystallization of the diastereomeric salt of R(+)α-lipoic acid-R(+)α-methylbenzylamine, wherein the recrystallization solvent consists of a mixture of non-polar/polar solvents ;

 

Diastereomeric salts are isolated by reacting the salts with an acid selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydroxy-carboxylic acids having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and aqueous phosphoric acid to obtain R(+)α-lipoic acid.
