what is Theaflavin?
Black tea theaflavins are natural polyphenolic compounds formed during tea fermentation, and are golden in color.
They belong to the polyphenol hydroxyl group and account for 0.3% to 2% of the dry weight of black tea, giving the tea soup a bright golden color.
What are the main sources of theaflavins?
1. Black Tea
Core source: During the fermentation process of black tea, tea polyphenols undergo enzymatic oxidation to produce a large amount of theaflavins, with a content reaching 0.4%~2%.
2. Dark Tea
Produced through microbial fermentation, with a lower content than black tea.
3. Oolong Tea/White Tea
Present in trace amounts.
4. Green Tea
Almost none, with very low content.
theaflavins benefits:
1. Cardiovascular Protection
It can regulate blood lipids, lower LDL cholesterol, and raise HDL cholesterol. It can also dilate blood vessels, combat atherosclerosis, and prevent thrombosis.
2. Antioxidant
Theaflavin powder is free radical scavenging ability far surpasses that of vitamins C/E, reducing cellular oxidative damage.
3. Anti-inflammatory
It can inhibit inflammatory pathways, reduce inflammatory factors, and has excellent anti-inflammatory effects.
4. Prevention of metabolic diseases
- Lowering blood sugar and slowing carbohydrate absorption
- Weight loss
5. Liver Protection
It can alleviate toxin damage and prevent cirrhosis.
6. Nerve Protection
It can inhibit β-amyloid protein deposition and delay Alzheimer's disease.
7. Anti-cancer Potential
Theaflavin extract induces cancer cell apoptosis and inhibits tumor angiogenesis, but this is still in the clinical trial stage.
8. Antibacterial Properties
It has broad-spectrum inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
theaflavin uses:
1. Food Industry
Natural colorants, preservatives
2. Pharmaceuticals and Health Products
3. Cosmetics
Sunscreen and anti-aging ingredients, protecting against UV damage.
4. Agriculture
- Plant growth regulators
- Enhancing disease resistance.
